CONCORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in North Carolina’s 8th Congressional district, today held a press conference in Concord and made the following statement:

“I want to thank you all for coming today for this important announcement. I’m joined here by my family – my wife Colleen, my son John, his wife Michelle and my granddaughter Addison, my son Josh, and my daughter Sarah. I’m blessed to have such a wonderful family, and I’ve instilled in my children the values of hard work and beliefs in God and our country.

“With less than a month left until the runoff election between myself and Harold Johnson, I’ve made a personal decision. I’m going to sponsor a car in this Saturday’s NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Number 40, Mike Bliss, who was last year’s winner of this race, will be driving the Tim D’Annunzio for Congress car.

“I’m sponsoring this car to put my campaign in high gear. I understand the importance of the racing industry here in Cabarrus County, and it’s an industry that provides jobs for so many.  From the mechanics who work on the cars in the pits, to those employed by the speedway, to neighboring businesses who benefit from the one hundred thousand plus spectators that pack the stands.

“As a business owner myself, who has created over 350 jobs right here in North Carolina, I know that small businesses and even bigger industries like motorsports are so important to bringing jobs to our state and our district. That’s why I’ll fight to reduce taxes for small businesses, and support proposals like the Fair Tax.  From Cabarrus to Cumberland County, I’ll make the 8th district more business friendly and better for the people.

“As for those of you who came today to hear my response to the lies and accusations printed in yesterday’s Charlotte Observer, I have just a few comments.

“The allegations are unsubstantiated and come from second-hand sources.  As you can see, my family and I have healed those wounds and moved on.  We are committed to leaving the past behind and moving into a better and more prosperous future, where we can live out our creed — that all of us are equal, where we can enjoy life, liberty and the fruits of our own labors. We are standing against the powerful individuals who think of themselves as powerful and “more equal” than us.

“The information printed in yesterday’s newspaper was fed to journalists by certain individuals who are afraid of independent, rugged individualists, like me, who refuse to bow down to those who hold the power and want control for themselves, because they’re more concerned with getting someone elected who will put their version of political party over the people.

“I received nearly 10,000 votes on Election Day – one thousand more than the second place finisher – and I am clearly the people’s choice for the 8th district Congressional seat.

“Yet, those power brokers are willing to go to any length to avoid electing a citizen legislator like myself – even if it means destroying a man’s character with hateful rhetoric.

“Chairman Fetzer broke the Plan of Organization of the Republican Party by speaking against my candidacy.  Similar situations are playing out across the country, and as a candidate supported by the tea party groups across the district, I’m running for Congress to return this seat to the people — to my friends and neighbors here in the 8th district — and to take it back from the power players and political insiders in Raleigh and Washington.

“We have to do this:  we cannot allow negative, venomous, vicious attacks that let the insiders keep the people outside . We cannot and we will not let the power brokers and their own quest for control cause “government of the people, by the people and for the people” to perish.

“We will overcome — and I will continue to reach out to the people of the 8th District as we approach the runoff election on June 22, and afterward.  And I’m confident that we will overcome the obstacles I’m faced with, just as I have in every situation and every circumstance throughout my life.

“Thank you again, and God Bless you all.”
