Press Releases
RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district, today announced two endorsements of his campaign by high-ranking, retired military officials.
Lt. Gen. (Ret) Jerry Boykin and Lt. Col. (Ret) Bucky Burruss have announced that they are supporting Tim this election year.
General Boykin, former Commanding General of both the U.S. Army Special Operations Command and the JFK Special Warfare Center, made his endorsement of Tim official at a fundraiser earlier this week. He made it clear that he is only supporting one additional candidate this year, Republican Roy Moore for Governor of Alabama.
“In 1776, our founding fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor for this country, even as they faced the threat of execution for treason,” Boykin said at the fundraiser. “Our country is at another critical juncture, facing threats from socialists and terrorists, and those who want to do this country harm. Tim D’Annunzio is the man we need in Washington, to fight to restore our country, and fight for the American Dream.”
Lt. Col. (Ret) Bucky Burruss, a former Special Operations Commander, also pledged to support Tim this year.
“Tim D’Annunzio has the understanding of what it takes to get this country back on track,” Burruss said. “He’s a veteran who knows it will take a fight to get back to the basics of the Constitution and the foundations that made this country great.”
Over 100 people attended the fundraiser to support Tim D’Annunzio and to hear Lt. Col. Burruss and Lt. Gen. Boykin endorse his campaign for Congress.

RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district, today challenged Larry Kissell to return over $8,000 in contributions from disgraced Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel. Rangel was recently reprimanded by the House Ethics Committee for taking Caribbean trips that were improperly paid for with corporate and special interest funds.
“Since 2006, Larry Kissell has accepted $8,000 in contributions from Charlie Rangel. By aligning himself with Rangel and Nancy Pelosi, Larry Kissell has shown us his true liberal colors,” Tim D’Annunzio said.
“Other Members of Congress that accepted contributions from Charlie Rangel are quickly distancing themselves from him, and returning the money or donating it to charity. Why isn’t Larry Kissell following their lead?
“I suspect that Kissell is closer to Pelosi and her liberal establishment than he’d like voters in the 8th district to believe. While he refuses to take a stand on any issue, I’m not going to apologize for making my positions known to the public and being the leader that North Carolina deserves in Congress. I will continue the fight to represent the will of the voters in the 8th district and unseat Larry Kissell this November.”
Additional ethics investigations of Rangel’s finances and fundraising are still under way, with decisions by the House Ethics Committee pending.

RAEFORD, NC – Republican Tim D’Annunzio, candidate for Congress in the 8th district of North Carolina, reported today that his campaign had $372,520 cash on hand at the close of 2009, again putting him in the best financial position of any North Carolina candidate challenging an incumbent Member of Congress.
Tim has been holding town hall meetings across the 8th district, talking to voters in every county about his plan to create jobs, reduce the deficit, and stop out-of-control government spending. His message is clearly resonating with voters, with over 178 individuals contributing to his campaign since he announced his run for Congress in late September.
“I want to thank the individuals who have donated to my campaign, and to everyone in the 8th district who understands the urgency of the situation our country has found itself in,” Tim D’Annunzio said. “We need to defeat Larry Kissell and put a stop to spending money we just don’t have.
“I’ll continue to hold open forums for the voters to find out where I stand on all national issues, and I’m committed to giving all residents of the 8th district a conservative voice in Washington and returning to the principles and foundations of our Constitution.”
Tim D’Annunzio is also the only candidate in the 8th district with a major media buy, and has district-wide television ads running on News Channel 14 and Fox News.

RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district, today spoke out against President Obama’s $3.8 trillion budget and projections of sky-high deficits this year and in the future.
“The budget that Obama is sending to Congress is absolutely outrageous. As our country is on the brink of recovering from a recession, the Democrats and Larry Kissell want to dig our country into an even deeper hole of spending money that we just don’t have,” Tim D’Annunzio said.
President Obama’s budget leaves our country with a record high deficit that equals almost 11 percent of the gross domestic product. Economists generally consider anything above 3 percent to be unsustainable over the long haul.
“This budget increases the deficit this year to a new record high of $1.6 trillion. Voters in the 8th district know that we cannot continue to borrow money at this rate. This money isn’t coming from our friendly community banks – it comes from China, and at any time they can pull the plug on us. We’re on a crash course to bankrupt our country and our children’s future, and this reckless spending spree must stop.”
The budget also includes $1.4 trillion in new taxes over the next decade, including $60 billion in estimated tax revenue from businesses due to a rule change on the way business inventory is taxed.
“Last week, President Obama touted his ‘spending freeze,’ which I questioned as phony. Now we all know that the President wasn’t serious, and only plans to tax and spend his way through his first, and hopefully only, term as President. As a small business owner, I know these taxes will only reduce the likelihood that businesses will begin to invest in new employees and put people in the 8th district back to work.
“Just as he has with every other spending proposal by the President, Larry Kissell is continuing to go along with Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid on these spending increases and putting the financial future of our country on the brink of collapse. This election year is the last chance for voters in the 8th district to put an end to Larry Kissell’s support for out-of-control spending, and put our country on the road to economic recovery.”

RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district, today questioned Larry Kissell’s repeated attempt to say one thing, and do another regarding the phony spending freeze issued by President Obama.
Obama announced a so-called spending freeze on non-essential funding, and plans to formally talk about the issue in his State of the Union address tonight.
“President Obama and Larry Kissell are talking out of both sides of their mouths,” Tim D’Annunzio said. “Non-discretionary funding rose by 17% in President Obama’s first year, and now he wants to freeze the spending at these incredibly high levels? Voters in the 8th district aren’t buying it.”
According to the CBO, the $250 billion in savings amounts to a negligible 0.5% of the $43 trillion in spending over the next decade.
“Larry Kissell’s positions show he is a typical politician. First, he wanted to pay down the debt with money we borrowed in the first place to fund the TARP program. Now, he wants to freeze spending at all-time highs and act like he’s a fiscal conservative. His policies are bad for our national economy, and bad for the 8th district.”

A surge of support and a fundraiser contributed to an increase in donations
RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district of North Carolina, announced today that he raised nearly $40,000 in the week ending December 13. A recent surge in support from voters in the 8th district and a fundraiser on Sunday evening helped to cap off an incredible week for Tim D’Annunzio’s campaign.
“By supporting my campaign, residents of the 8th district are sending a serious message to Washington,” Tim said. “They are fed up with the way things are going and know we need to turn this country around now. The way to do that is by returning to the principles and beliefs this country was founded upon.
“The American Dream is slipping away for future generations, because our representatives in Washington continue to spend their way out of this recession while unemployment remains at over 10%. As the only job-creating businessman in this congressional race, I know that it takes lower taxes and reduced regulation to spur job growth. In Washington, I will work to keep taxes low for small businesses and encourage companies to expand and grow to create more jobs right here in the 8th district.
“I thank those who have supported and contributed to my campaign, and I will continue to spread my message of constitutional conservatism as I meet with concerned voters across the district.”
With last week’s $40,000 in donations, Tim is on track to report another six-figure amount of cash on hand at the conclusion of the quarter that ends December 31.

RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district of North Carolina, today commented on President Obama’s plan for a second stimulus package to jump-start the economy and create jobs.
“President Obama is absolutely wrong in thinking we can spend our way out of this recession,” Tim D’Annunzio said. “The first stimulus package of $787 billion actually caused our economy to lose jobs, and our unemployment rate skyrocketed from 8% to its current rate of over 10%.”
Without giving a price tag, President Barack Obama outlined a new multibillion-dollar stimulus and jobs proposals Tuesday, saying the nation must continue to “spend our way out of this recession” until more Americans are back at work.
“This economy cannot afford to lose any more jobs – but this spending package will do exactly that. President Obama thinks he can throw money at the problem, but spending our way out of a recession is not the answer. The way to put people back to work and encourage companies to invest in new employees is to lower taxes and reduce regulation.
“As the only job-creating businessman in this congressional race, I know what it takes to spur job growth. In Washington, I will work to keep taxes low for small businesses and encourage companies to expand and grow to create more jobs right here in the 8th district.”

RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district of North Carolina, today denounced Howard Harold Johnson for his entry into the 8th district Congressional race. Johnson does not currently, nor has he ever, lived in the 8th district.
“Voters in our district, from Cumberland to Cabarrus County and in between, should be offended that a candidate who has never been a resident of this district is attempting to represent them in Washington,” said Tim D’Annunzio. “I have been a resident of Hoke County for thirty years and understand the dynamics of our district as it spreads from the military base at Ft. Bragg, to the financial hub of Charlotte.
“We don’t need a member of the biased, mainstream media representing our interests in Washington. Our community deserves better than that. What we need is someone who knows how to create jobs and get this country back on track to economic stability. As a small business owner, I have created hundreds of jobs right here in North Carolina and will push for lower taxes and less regulation to reduce unemployment and encourage economic growth.
“Mr. Johnson is an outsider who thinks his sports casting background will win him votes. Ironically, the vote he won’t get is his own. My message to him is clear – stay out of our district.”

RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district of North Carolina, today voiced his opposition to a bill in the House that would use money from TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) to pay down the national debt. Congressman Larry Kissell, the liberal Democrat currently representing the 8th district, has signed on to cosponsor this bill.
“We all know that the $700 billion TARP bailout was paid for with borrowed money. Using the remaining $200 billion to pay down the national debt is no different than using your Visa card to pay your Visa bill,” Tim D’Annunzio said.
“These wasteful and outrageous proposals must be stopped. While I believe we must end billion-dollar bailouts and recoup the money lent to financial institutions, Larry Kissell and liberals in Washington are continuing on with a deceptive pattern of looking like they are attempting to fix a problem they themselves created, while they continue to make the situation worse.
“Larry Kissell has apparently checked his common-sense at the door. Everyday Americans know that paying down the debt with borrowed money is not the way to return this country to fiscal responsibility and economic stability. We must get back to the constitutional principles this country was founded upon, and keep taxes low for Americans and small businesses.”

RAEFORD, NC – Tim D’Annunzio, candidate for Congress in the 8th district of North Carolina, today issued the following statement as reports began to emerge on the President’s intentions regarding General McChrystal’s recommendations on troop levels in Afghanistan:
“After reading about the President’s plan to send a few thousand troops to Afghanistan and to send small numbers of troops a little bit at a time over the next couple of years, I am disturbed by the ulterior motives of the Obama administration and liberal Members of Congress.
“This morning on Fox News, Senator Bayh said that Obama’s decision wasn’t the McChrystal plan and stated that it was actually Obama and Gates’ ‘tactical judgment’ overriding McChrystal’s ‘recommendations.’
“According to Fox News, Bayh said he is ‘going to trust the tactical judgment’ of Defense Secretary Robert Gates on the appropriate force size, and that Obama and Gates ‘have to show some deference to the military commander,’ but McChrystal’s suggestions ‘are just recommendations, they are not the Ten Commandments.’
“The article goes on to say that, ‘Supporters of a phased deployment say it will allow Obama to determine whether the counterinsurgency strategy proposed by McChrystal is working.’
“How can the McChrystal plan be judged on its merits if it isn’t being implemented? This is the Obama strategy and it has nothing to do with winning in Afghanistan. The strategy of the Obama administration is to do enough to claim they are implementing the McChrystal plan, when in fact they are doing just enough to be able to blame McChrystal when the inevitable defeat occurs in Afghanistan due to their refusal to listen to and follow his plan.
“The Obama strategy is a domestic strategy and is aimed at his enemies who are opposing his U.S. national destruction. The troops in the field and the generals are all acceptable casualties to President Obama and must be subordinated to his priority of social reconstruction after destruction. I will continue to push for full implementation of General McChrystal’s plan and refuse to allow our men and women in uniform to become political pawns.”
